Introductory Diploma in Vocational Studies - Animal Care Options



Level 1 Qualification
Start Date:  September 2010 (full time 1 year)


Entry Requirements: 
No formal requirements although candidates must either have successfully completed the Skills for Working Life course or have basic literacy and numeracy skills. Candidates will be assessed on their numeracy/literacy level prior to starting.


The Course:
This one-year full-time course offers learners the opportunity to explore and study different pathways that give a chance to sample a range of career routes. It is designed to provide a stepping stone into either gaining employment or progressing onto a level 2 subject specific course.  Assessment takes place throughout the year by way of practical skills observations and written tasks as well as by collecting evidence such as photographs to put in a portfolio.  Support for numeracy and literacy is provided.


Course Content: ALL Students will study the following units: Developing Skills in IT, The Healthy Body, Literacy/Numeracy/Key Skills and Customer Service.


They then have a choice of 2 from any of the following:
 Practical Estate Skills
 Land and Environment Conservation
 Animal Husbandry
 Caring for Small Animals
 Introduction to 3D Design Craft
 Exploring Materials in Art and Design
 Floristry
 Horticulture
 Land-based Machinery Operations
 Horse Riding
 Horse Care
 Taking Part in Sport
 Organising a Sport or Leisure Event


And then 2 from the following: Social Responsibility, Working in Sport, Working Safely in the Land-based Industry.  Finally, all students will complete key skills at the appropriate level.


Equipment Required:  Equipment will vary depending on the subjects chosen but will include safety boots, outdoor clothing, training kit, and writing materials.


Financial Information:
If you are under 19 on 31 August 2009, and are resident in the UK, you do not have to pay tuition or examination fees. For mature students, the tuition fee is £1020.00 per year and the examination fee is £94.00. Help with fees up to the full cost of the course may be available.  For further information regarding funding please speak to the Student Information Centre staff on 01603 731232.
