Easton College Courses : Part Time
National Award in Arboriculture



Start date: September 2010  One day per week for one year


Entry Requirements:  This course will equip students with essential knowledge and training in Arboriculture. The student should already have a level 2 qualification in arboriculture or a related discipline e.g. Horticulture or NPTC qualification.
 
The Course: This course will enhance and develop Arboricultural skills. 


Course Content: Six units will be studied:
• Unit 1:  Investigative project in the horticulture (arboriculture) sector.
Choose a relevant arboricultural topic, plan a schedule at work, investigate the topic, produce results, publish report.
• Unit 4:  Principles of plant and soil science.
Identify plant parts, functions and modifications. Identify soil components, relation to plant growth role of soil organisms.
• Unit 14:  Plant establishment and maintenance.
Tree planting - maintenance requirements, nursery stock categories and care and maintenance of plantings.
• Unit 21:  Tree identification, planting and care.
Identification of a range of trees and shrubs, care of trees and shrubs, planting strategies.
• Unit 22:  Tree climbing, pruning and dismantling.
Tree Climbing, pruning strategies, use of pruning tools, tree dismantling.
• Unit 38:  Tree pests and disease.
Identification of tree pests and diseases, control strategies, colonization strategies, effects on tree and shrub growth.
The course will be assessed using a mixture of portfolios, practical tests, presentations, identification tests and verbal tests.


Progression: Foundation degree programme or employment


Equipment Required: Safety boots (EN345 Class 2 chainsaw type), working clothes, writing and recording materials, note pads, A4 pads and A4 files.


Financial Information:


If you are aged 16 –18 on 31 August 2010, and are resident in the UK for the last three years, you do not have to pay tuition or examination fees. For mature students, the tuition fee is £1250.00, together with an examination fee of £109.00.
