Beekeeping Plus
Entry Requirements:
There are NO formal requirements.
The Course:
This course will be of interest to the bee-keeper who has at least one season’s experience and wishes to gain a greater understanding of the subject.
Attendance:
One evening per week for eight weeks in the spring term.
7.00 pm – 9.00 pm.
Course Content:
How the honey bee works, its anatomy, physiology and development; honey bee colony organisation – the work of Von Frisch and communication of food sources and dance language, Lindauer’s work on communication within the colony; the role of pheromones in colony organization; swarming – an examination of some of the theories of swarming and their practical application, methods of swarming; queen rearing and genetics; strains of bees and factors to consider in selection of stock; methods of breeding large and small quantities of queens; bee-keeping techniques; honey and nectar – the relationship between honey and nectar, factors affecting nectar secretion in plants, the chemistry of honey, handling honey and preparation for market; the biology of pollination and factors which affect it, the role of honey bees in pollination; bee diseases and pests, their life cycles, methods of controls; laboratory practical on bee diseases; revision and discussion.
Progression:
Successful candidates can progress to specialist bee-keeping courses.
